Dunfermline Athletic 1-2 St Mirren

Jack Baird scores
Jack Baird netted St Mirren's second goal at East End Park

St Mirren moved 11 points clear at the top of the Scottish Championship with victory over Dunfermline Athletic.

Lewis Morgan's back-heeled pass set up Cammy Smith to strike the visitors' first-half opener.

Nicky Clark latched on to Jean-Yves M'voto's header to nod Dunfermline level early in the second period.

Kyle Magennis's free-kick was tipped over by Pars goalkeeper Lee Robinson before Jack Baird's deflected volley put St Mirren back in front.

Morgan then fired high and wide from a good position before James Craigen went close for the hosts late on.

Second-placed Dundee United, who host Greenock Morton on Saturday, have played two games fewer than St Mirren and hold a seven-point advantage over both Dunfermline and Livingston.

Post-match reaction

Dunfermline Athletic manager Allan Johnston: "We were causing them problems, we get the goal back and then we shoot ourselves in the foot by losing such a poor goal.

"We kind of penned them in second half. Too many times we stand here saying we're unlucky. Maybe that's why St Mirren are top of the league because they can grind out results.

"I don't think there was a big gap between St Mirren and ourselves tonight so we've got to take a bit of heart from that but it comes down to winning games."

St Mirren manager Jack Ross: "Brilliant win. It didn't surprise me the nature of the match.

"Frenetic towards the end but I thought we showed terrific character and resilience in that period.

"It's another one down, another three points on the board, a really good points total already but a long, long way to go.

"This was a tough game for us tonight. Delighted to get the win."
