Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has been given a one-match touchline ban and fined £16,000 after he was sent off in his side's 1-1 draw against West Ham on Sunday.

It means Mourinho will be absent for Wednesday's EFL Cup quarter-final against the Hammers at Old Trafford.

The 53-year-old was sent to the stands by referee Jon Moss after kicking a water bottle in frustration.

He admitted the Football Association's charge of improper conduct.

It is the second charge for the Portuguese in two months after he was sent off against Burnley on 29 October. Mourinho received a one-match ban and an £8,000 fine for that incident.

The former Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid boss was also fined £50,000 for comments he made about referee Anthony Taylor before the Liverpool match at Anfield on 17 October.

In Sunday's game, Mourinho reacted after Paul Pogba was booked for diving following an apparent incident with West Ham captain Mark Noble.

Replays showed Noble did not make contact with the 23-year-old France midfielder.

A disciplinary commission sat down on Wednesday after Mourinho accepted the charge on Tuesday.

While the charge was non-standard due to his past indiscretions, the improper conduct [kicking a water bottle] was regarded as relatively minor. He did not swear or have a go at the referee or officials.

Had it not been for his previous dismissal against Burnley, it would probably have been dealt with by an £8,000 fine, so effectively the one-match touchline ban and the additional £8,000 is a result of the previous issues.

There is no issue with the decision coming so close to a game as it does not materially affect it. He can still speak to the players before the match, at half-time and afterwards, and communicate with the bench.
