Oxford United striker Wes Thomas will miss the rest of the season after rupturing an Achilles tendon.

Thomas, 29, lasted just 11 minutes as a substitute in the 4-1 win against Coventry City on Saturday.

U's head coach Michael Appleton confirmed Thomas is set to have an operation on Wednesday.

"Over the next 48 hours we will learn more about the exact procedure for that," he told BBC Radio Oxford. "But, the reality is that's his season over."

Thomas joins midfielder Liam Sercombe among Oxford United's long-term injured. Sercombe is set to miss the majority of the rest of season after rupturing medial knee ligaments.

Defender Joe Skarz will also be unavailable for the visit of Gillingham on Tuesday after suffering concussion in a clash of heads with team-mate Chey Dunkley against Coventry.
