Oxford United midfielder Liam Sercombe is set to miss the rest of the season after rupturing a medial knee ligament.

Sercombe, 26, sustained the injury late on in Oxford's 2-0 League One defeat at Shrewsbury on Saturday.

"He had a scan on Wednesday, which has revealed a complete rupture," boss Michael Appleton told BBC Radio Oxford.

"That will probably mean around six months out I imagine, regardless of whether or not he chooses to have an operation on it."

Former Exeter City player Sercombe joined The U's last season and has scored 16 league goals in 60 appearances.
