Michael Appleton: Oxford United in League One 'dogfight', says manager
Oxford United manager Michael Appleton says his side are in a "dogfight" in League One following defeat by fellow strugglers Shrewsbury.
The U's were beaten 2-0 on Saturday to be left just one place and two points above the division's relegation zone.
"We need to start winning games," Appleton told BBC Radio Oxford. "The players are aware of that."
"We need to get the basics right and have enough at the top end of the pitch to get it right in front of goal."
Oxford were promoted automatically from League Two last season, but have won just five games so far in League One and are without a win in four games.
"We're going to be in a dogfight for the next two or three months." Appleton added. "I've been looking over my shoulder since the first day of the season.
"First and foremost, we've got to get enough points on the board to stay in this division. Once we do that, then we can see how much we can push on."
