Notts County manager John Sheridan says the enthusiasm of Alan Smith provides a great example for team-mates.

The 36-year-old made his sixth outing of the season in Wednesday's EFL Trophy 2-1 loss to Sunderland Under-21s.

Sheridan told BBC Radio Nottingham: "What I love about him is enthusiasm. It is like he is making his debut.

"It is a different world with some players today. I am watching him and how he wants to do everything right and if not, he's disappointed."

The former Leeds, Manchester United, Newcastle and MK Dons player joined Notts in May 2014 and since made over 50 appearances.

"He was a quality player in his day and I think he showed at Sunderland he can still probably play up front," continued Sheridan.

"I didn't want to take him off but he came off with cramp."

The Magpies' defeat by Sunderland meant they bowed out of the competition at the group stage.
