Curtis Nelson: Tribunal rules Oxford United to pay Plymouth initial £200,000
A tribunal has ruled Oxford United must pay Plymouth Argyle an initial £200,000 for central defender Curtis Nelson.
Nelson, 23, joined the U's in July after turning down the offer of a new contract with Argyle.
An independent transfer tribunal was required as Nelson was an academy graduate aged under 24 and the clubs could not agree on a transfer fee.
Plymouth could eventually receive up to £280,000, subject to the number of appearances Nelson makes for Oxford.
"The figure is significantly higher than our initial expectation," Oxford United chairman Darryl Eales said.
"Plymouth have seemingly benefited from the lack of clarity of how the youth compensation regulations are applied.
"This is a huge amount of money for a club such as ourselves and well above the amount budgeted."
Injuries have limited Nelson to just five appearances in all competitions for Oxford this season.
