A fan of Nigeria Premier League side Akwa United has died in a fatal bus accident while on a trip to see the club against Enyimba in Saturday's top flight fixture.

The accident happened at the Ekparakwa junction in Akwa Ibom en route to Port Harcourt for the clash against two-time African champions Enyimba.

"Our supporters were travelling on the Akwa starlet bus for the game in Port Harcourt when they suffered a brake failure," club spokesman Uwem Ekoh told BBC Sport.

"The bus flipped over, one of our fans died in the tragedy and several others sustained serious injuries.

"It happened about 30 minutes after they left Uyo, so the supporters have all returned home for immediate medical attention."

The game between Akwa United and Enyimba did kick-off in Port Harcourt.

This is the third auto crash to hit the country's top division in three months.

The team bus of Nigerian Premier League side Ikorodu United was involved in an accident with a trailer in June, en route to the central Nigerian town of Makurdi for a league fixture against Lobi Stars.

Four weeks later the team bus of another top side, Rivers United, was involved in an accident at Ndele axis of the East-West Road in Rivers State.

The crash happened on their way back to Port Harcourt after an FA cup game in Ibadan.
