Angus MacDonald: Torquay United looking to replace Barnsley-bound captain
Torquay United player-boss Kevin Nicholson says he is already looking to replace skipper Angus MacDonald, who is on the verge of joining Barnsley.
The 23-year-old centre-back only signed a new deal at the end of the month, but is set to leave for an undisclosed fee.
The National League club are in financial difficulty after a proposed takeover collapsed on Sunday.
"It's not ideal that you're having to sell your captain, but needs must," Nicholson told BBC Sport.
"Of course he's going to be a loss - he's a fantastic player and I fully expect him to go and move on again from Barnsley.
"If we have a treasure like that, sometimes you have to give it up for the greater good. The board had to make that decision and I move on now without Angus."
Paraguay international and former Liverpool academy player Ronald Huth played at centre-back as a trialist in Torquay's 2-1 pre-season victory over Premier League side West Brom on Monday.
"Now it's a case of finding his (MacDonald's) replacement, and Ronald's certainly put himself in the driving seat for that," added Nicholson.
"He had a very impressive debut, showed a lot of good stuff and we need a centre-half, so a lot of it adds up."
