New Oldham Athletic manager John Sheridan has confirmed he will have funds to bring in new players.

Sheridan returned to the Latics, who sit 22nd in League One, on Wednesday after leaving Newport County.

He spent nearly three years in charge at Boundary Park previously but left in 2009 and took up managerial positions at Chesterfield and Plymouth.

"There are one or two players I've been enquiring about," the 55-year-old told BBC Radio Manchester.

"It will give us a big boost and a lift to us as a team as if I bring players it will push and hopefully improve other people who are in the positions."

Sheridan added he was targeting a centre-back, a midfielder and a wide man to add to the squad after replacing David Dunn as boss.

"People could say I was taking a risk because I've been here before and there were fond memories of me, but I'm really positive about the move," he added.

"I think it's a good challenge for me as well and will show whether I've learnt - it's a good challenge for me to try and keep us in this division.

"Once I've done that I really look forward to pushing the team back on to where we were five or six years ago, challenging at the top."

Youth coach Tony Philliskirk will assist Sheridan for the game on Saturday for the trip to Bradford, but he confirmed he is in discussions with a permanent number two.
