Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis says the form of teenage winger George Cooper may have been affected by the high-profile start to his career.
The 19-year-old scored on his full home debut against Coventry in October 2014 but has struggled to make an impact for the League One strugglers this term.
"It may have happened - most of the young players do read the headlines," Davis told BBC Radio Stoke.
"The opposition become more aware of you and change tactics to subdue you."
Davis added: "He has to learn from that and find a way of performing better when teams know about you.
"That comes with age and experience and I know he'll come good again - I know he's working hard."
After scoring three goals in 25 appearances last season, Cooper has played 12 times so far in 2015-16 but has not featured in Crewe's last seven league games.
"We all still believe in him but, like every young player, he has had a dip," Davis said. "He will get out of it - he's one of our prospects and we still regard him as someone with great potential."
