Luton Town 3-4 Northampton Town

Marc Richards
Northampton's Marc Richards has scored more than 150 league goals for 11 clubs during his career

Northampton went top of League Two with a dramatic victory over Luton, their first for 15 years at Kenilworth Road.

Paul Benson's overhead kick put Luton in front, but John-Joe O'Toole levelled from a slick free-kick routine.

Lawson D'Ath found the roof of the net from an acute angle and Marc Richards made it 3-1 to the Cobblers.

Benson pulled one back and Danny Green netted a penalty after Craig Mackail-Smith was fouled, but Ricky Holmes won it seconds after coming on as a sub.

Holmes ran forwards from halfway before beating home keeper Mark Tyler with a shot into the top corner, his first goal since recovering from groin and back injuries, to give Northampton their seventh successive win in all competitions.

The result put them two points clear at the top of the table, with Oxford held to a draw at home by Carlisle.

Luton first team coach Hakan Hayrettin told BBC Three Counties Radio:

"All we can do is keep working hard, motivating the players as much as possible to get out them out on the football pitch to perform to the best of their abilities.

"We gave away a sloppy free-kick and we got punished. We have got to do so much better in the final third defending.

"It's not for the lack of trying, desire and determination. We just need to get through this patch.

"John Still has broad shoulders. It wasn't long ago he was lifting the trophy and getting this proud and great football club back into the Football League. I'm sure if we keep working hard things will turn.
