Swindon Town manager Martin Ling has admitted match-winner Louis Thompson was about to be substituted before his late heroics against Walsall.

Thompson was struggling with a groin injury before scoring a 90th-minute winner at the County Ground on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old midfielder has featured nine times for the Robins since re-signing on loan from Norwich.

"He was about to come off but then we got the break and he scored," Ling told BBC Radio Wiltshire.

"His energy is important for us and I thought he was outstanding."

Ling was however disappointed with his side's display despite securing back-to-back home wins.

"I don't actually thing we played very well," Ling added after the 2-1 victory which moved them out of the League One relegation zone.

"We got a footballing lesson out there and I thought Walsall were excellent and the better side."

Thompson is hopeful of being fit for Swindon's trip to Chesterfield on Saturday despite being replaced by Anton Rodgers in stoppage-time.

"My groin wasn't feeling great before the goal and it certainly wasn't feeling much better after my knee slide, but it was a much-needed three points," Thompson said.

"I was in slight discomfort and I wanted to keep myself right for Saturday."
