Everton players celebrate
Everton have reached just two League Cup quarter-finals in 27 years

Everton beat Norwich on penalties to move into the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

Sebastien Bassong opened the scoring for Norwich, hooking in from close range following Gary O'Neil's pass.

Wes Hoolahan, Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe and Lewis Grabban all came close to netting for the visitors, but had their efforts kept out by goalkeeper Joel Robles.

Leon Osman levelled from Kevin Mirallas's pass and Darron Gibson hit the winning penalty in the shootout.

Everton not only progressed to just a second League Cup quarter-final in the last 27 years, but also extended Norwich's dismal recent run.

Alex Neil's side have lost their last three league games and went out of the competition despite looking the better side on occasions.

The home side had Spaniard Robles - in for Tim Howard - to thank for making some crucial saves.

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku had the best opportunity to put the home side in front, but struck straight at Declan Rudd and the Canaries goalkeeper made a superb save from a Mirallas free-kick.

Defender Bassong put Norwich ahead before Osman scuffed home the equaliser in normal time.

Matt Jarvis headed narrowly wide for the away side on 101 minutes, who then saw Hoolahan and Nathan Redmond miss in the shootout.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez: "I thought it was a fantastic cup tie. Credit to Norwich, they got the crowd frustrated in spells but we dealt with that really well.

"We are looking forward to seeing who we are going to face but we're still a long way from thinking about winning a trophy."

Norwich manager Alex Neil: "We played really well. If anyone deserved to win the match over the 90 or 120 minutes, it was us. Having gone out of the cup on penalties is disappointing.

"The boys did extremely well, worked extremely hard and deserved to go through. It was encouraging in terms of the performances and how the players applied themselves."
