Fulham 1-1 Leeds United

Leeds United boss Steve Evans
Steve Evans suffered a 3-1 home defeat against Fulham when in charge of Rotherham United on 29 August

Steve Evans began his managerial reign at Leeds United with a draw as Chris Wood's second-half penalty secured a point at Fulham in the Championship.

French striker Moussa Dembele gave Fulham the lead at Craven Cottage with a superb solo effort.

But New Zealand forward Wood converted from the spot after Dembele's second-half handball.

Evans, 52, was named as Uwe Rosler's successor as head coach on Monday following the German's sacking.

Sixth time lucky?

Evans, who was appointed on a rolling contract by Leeds owner Massimo Cellino, is the sixth manager since the Italian took over in April 2014.

The former Rotherham boss promised to bring "winning and attacking football" to Leeds when he was unveiled at Elland Road on Tuesday.

However, like his predecessors over the past 18 months under Cellino, he was unable to start his tenure with a victory.

The draw at least ended a run of three defeats, lifting Leeds to 18th in the table with 12 points from 12 games. They travel to bottom side Bolton on Saturday.

Leeds fell behind against the run of play when Dembele darted between Leeds defenders Liam Cooper and Sol Bamba and angled a shot inside Marco Silvestri's near post.

Fulham pressed for a second but the visitors showed resilience and equalised through Wood's penalty.

Cottagers goalkeeper Joe Lewis twice denied Mirco Antenucci late on to ensure the points were shared.

'The minimum the fans want is passion'

"I told the players tongue in cheek I had a contract until Friday and said they would leave before then if they did not give me passion," Evans told BBC Radio 5 live.

"This is a proud football club and, with the tradition it has, the minimum the fans will want to see is passion.

"The away end tonight had probably 5,000 Leeds fans in full voice and they were in full voice because they were probably proud of the team."

Fulham boss Kit Symons:

"It was a poor night. In the end we have got to be thankful for a point.

"Joe Lewis had a great performance which I am thankful for, but there were not too many other good performances.

"I haven't spoken to the chairman but I will in the next few days. He wants us to kick on and push the club up to where we want to be, which is up near the play-offs.

"But he has been very supportive and I am sure that will continue."
