Keshi Anderson's late goal earned Doncaster Rovers a narrow win at Shrewsbury in Darren Ferguson's first game in charge of the League One club.
The visitors went ahead when Richie Wellens' blocked shot fell for James Coppinger to slot in from 12 yards.
Shrewsbury's Larnell Cole hit the post, before Nat Knight-Percival headed in Liam Lawrence's corner to equalise.
But on-loan striker Anderson's powerful shot on 87 minutes was enough to lift Rovers out of the relegation zone.
For Shrewsbury, who slip back to 18th, just a point clear of the drop zone, it was a fifth home defeat in seven league games this season.
Shrewsbury lost summer signing Ian Black on only his fourth start, the Scottish midfielder having been forced off just after the hour mark with a hamstring injury.
Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:
"There was nothing more the players could give to me. We had a lot of good chances and were unfortunate that a couple didn't go in.
"I don't think we are far away from getting wins. All the games we have lost have been on a knife edge
"It just adds to the frustration to lose so late on, but overall I was satisfied and we will keep fighting.
"This is where you have to show character and bounce back. We have to have the spirit and fight to turn it round."
