Abel Hernandez's equaliser earned Hull City a draw with Sheffield Wednesday which stretches both sides' unbeaten run to five matches.

The Owls led at the break thanks to Fernando Forestieri, who turned sharply and shot in to the bottom corner.

But Hull were level within five minutes of the restart, Uruguayan Hernandez drilling in from close range following a fine double save by Keiren Westwood.

Both sides had chances in a frantic finale but neither could find a winner.

Hernandez almost put the visitors 2-1 ahead when his header was superbly pushed away by Westwood, while the best Owls chance saw Hull keeper Allan McGregor forced to produce a brilliant instinctive save to stop Andrew Robertson crashing the ball in to his own net.

But the draw was just about a fair reflection of a match which saw both sides on top at different stages.

Hull, who could have gone second in the table with a win, looked sharp and bright early on but fell behind slightly against the run of play when they failed to vacate their own penalty box following a corner and Italian striker Forestieri swivelled and netted from 10 yards.

Lucas Joao nearly made it 2-0 but his strike from the edge of the box was just about kept out by McGregor and Barry Bannan then blazed a glorious opportunity over the bar with his left foot.

The impressive Hernandez made Wednesday pay, calmly grabbing his fourth goal in five games for club and country after Westwood made good saves to deny Shaun Maloney and Jake Livermore.

With both teams refusing to settle for a point the game opened up but, after the chance for Hernandez and near own goal by Robertson, the main late excitement was provided by referee Keith Stroud who suffered an injury and had to be replaced by the fourth official.

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Carlos Carvalhal:

"I am very happy with our team and players, we played special in the first half, we scored and could have scored more. It was complete justice, the score at half-time and if we got a second goal the story would be different.

"Because they are strong team they had a reaction in the second half. They were better in the second half, but we created more chances in the first half, they had big problems.

"But I think a point is correct, but I am happy because we played a strong team. It's a point that is positive."

Hull boss Steve Bruce on Abel Hernandez:

"He has been halfway around the world, played in Bolivia, which is one of the highest altitudes on earth.

"The big thing was coming back from scoring for Uruguay, who have got Suarez and Cavani, he's in decent company and you could see yesterday that he's had a good week and he's had a good couple of weeks.

"Long may that continue because everyone needs a goalscorer and he at the moment is doing well.

"I thought about not playing him but yesterday in training made my mind up because he was as bright as a button, he was lively. So I thought he was in a rich vein of form, but you take a bit of a gamble."
