Rotherham boss Steve Evans has said the club cannot afford to sign midfielder Joey Barton, claiming the club could not even pay for his petrol.
Barton, 32, is currently without a team, having been released by Championship side QPR in May.
The former Newcastle midfielder had been set to join West Ham, but the move was cancelled after protests by fans.
"I don't think we could afford Joey's petrol, never mind Joey," Evans told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"Our problem would be funding Joey's Ferrari or whatever he's driving to Rotherham from where he lives.
"I think he's an outstanding footballer - when I saw West Ham linked with him I thought he'd be signing.
"If Joey Barton wants to come play for Rotherham United, give me a ring, Joey."
