Hibernian made their way through to the League Cup third-round draw, though it took a second half own-goal by defender Scott Rumsby to give them victory.

The home side dominated the early play, with Dylan McGeouch and Jason Cummings testing Stranraer keeper Conor Brennan and Fraser Fyvie hitting the bar.

Mark Oxley turned away a Craig Malcolm volley as Stranraer threatened.

But Hibs clinched the tie in 54 minutes when Rumsby turned the ball into his own net while trying to clear a cross.

Darren McGregor made his debut at full-back for Hibs after his move from Rangers but the action was at the other end of the pitch early on.

McGeouch had a net-bound shot tipped away by Brennan after just four minutes and Cummings, top scorer for Hibs last season, twice came close to opening the scoring with efforts from the edge of the area.

Cummings and Fyvie combined well to set up the former Aberdeen midfielder to clip a shot from 20 yards off the top of the crossbar with the keeper beaten.

While Hibernian had the upper hand, the visitors offered the occasional threat on the break.

Oxley, who had been a spectator for much of the game, was called into action after 35 minutes when he brilliantly turned away Malcolm's close-range volley.

Hibs deservedly moved in front after the interval but with a slice of good fortune. Fyvie cut the ball back from the bye-line and, unfortunately for Rumsby, the defender slid the ball into the back of his own goal in his attempt to clear.

Liam Henderson then had an excellent chance to increase the home side's lead but his effort from 12 yards was straight into the keeper's chest.

With four minutes left, Stranraer had one last chance to equalise when Andy Stirling burst into the box, but his shot was just inches over the crossbar.
