Middlesbrough 0-1 Bristol City

Daniel Ayala of Middlesbrough and Aaron Wilbraham of Bristol City
Middlesbrough suffered their first home defeat since February

Bristol City earned their first win of the season, also inflicting a first defeat on Middlesbrough, with Joe Bryan's goal securing victory.

Bryan sent the ball into the top corner to score on eight minutes.

City had several chances to add to their lead, with Bobby Reid firing over, while keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos twice kept out the visitors.

Ben Hamer then denied Christian Stuani, Daniel Ayala and Grant Leadbitter as his side held on to earn victory.

The only goal came when Bryan curled a sublime shot into the top corner after Reid's cutback.

Reid himself should have doubled the lead but he fired over the bar after Aaron Wilbraham's initial shot was kept out by Konstantopoulos.

Boro were again thankful to Konstantopoulos for keeping the score at 1-0 after Jonathan Kodjia's shot from just inside the area was superbly kept out by the keeper.

The hosts worked hard for an equaliser in the second period and the visitors needed two saves from Hamer, first to stop Stuani's close-range effort and then moments later, when he prevented Ayala's header going in.

Hamer later kept out Leadbitter's low drive and then Aden Flint cleared off the line as City, last season's League One champions, secured their first three points of the Championship campaign.

Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka:

"I always have to choose the best 11 for the game and today I decided to make some changes to that and it didn't work.

"It's difficult for me to understand the performance. I don't know what happened; we didn't play how we usually do.

"We had very good players on the pitch and it's difficult to understand. I have to analyse what happened."

Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill:

"We have played really well and not got the wins. We could have been 3-0 up at half-time. Middlesbrough are a really good team full of good players so we had to really defend well.

"Hopefully that will give us the confidence we need. If Middlesbrough don't get automatic promotion, they will certainly be in the top six.

"This result will surprise some people in the Championship. The only people that won't be surprised is Sheffield Wednesday, Brentford and Leeds because we're not bad."
