Northampton have signed goalkeeper Ryan Clarke on an two-year deal after he left Oxford United by mutual consent.

The 33-year-old had been the U's longest-serving player, having made 264 appearances since joining from Northwich Victoria in 2009.

Clarke is reunited with Chris Wilder, his former boss at Oxford.

"If Chris is in charge at whatever level the team's at, they're going to be there or thereabouts in the mix," Clarke told BBC Radio Northampton.

"He's a pure football man, and I don't know of anyone with standards as high as his."

Clarke will now compete with ex-Leicester man Adam Smith for the first-choice goalkeeper spot at Sixfields.

"I've spoken to a couple of goalkeeping coaches about him, and they rate him highly," said Clarke. "I've got no divine right to come here and play, it's all about making sure I prove myself first."
