Wigan Athletic 0-1 Leeds United

Alex Mowatt
Alex Mowatt's winner was his eighth goal of the season

Alex Mowatt struck a second-half winner for Leeds to leave Wigan eight points adrift of Championship safety.

Outgoing Latics chairman Dave Whelan's passionate speech on the pitch before kick-off failed to inspire a first home win since August.

Mowatt, who scored a spectacular free-kick as Leeds beat Ipswich 2-1 on Wednesday, scored with his left foot from the edge of the penalty area.

Leeds keeper Marco Silvestri had to tip over a late James McClean free-kick.

Whelan, 78, who announced his resignation on Tuesday after 20 years as Wigan chairman, addressed the club's fans before the match. He will stay on as the club's owner.

Malky Mackay's side improved after going behind to midfielder Mowatt's eighth goal of the season, and were perhaps unlucky not to save a point.

Leeds were just a point above the relegation zone at the turn of the year, but head coach Neil Redfearn has pulled them towards mid-table, overseeing a run of seven wins in 10 league matches.

They had a penalty appeal turned down in a dour first half, with striker Billy Sharp claiming he had been brought down by Wigan defender Gaetan Bong.

Home hurt
Wigan have failed to win any of their last 15 home games, losing eight. Their last success at the DW Stadium was a 4-0 victory over Birmingham on 30 August.

Wigan created little before half-time on a poor pitch, with Kim Bo-kyung's deflected shot their best effort.

Wigan substitute Don Cowie was unsuccessful with a penalty claim - for handball by Giuseppe Bellusci - and McClean's shot on the turn was pushed aside by Silvestri moments before Mowatt scored.

Wigan boss Malky Mackay on defeat by Leeds

Just before the hour mark, Leeds' Italian keeper had to parry another shot from Republic of Ireland international McClean, who later hit a volley into the side netting as Wigan were frustrated in their attempts to find an equaliser.

Wigan manager Malky Mackay: "I'm just looking at the stats and we've had 60% possession and 19 attempts on goal.

"To end up with so much of the ball, in their six-yard box, and not be able to put the ball in the net is disappointing."

Leeds United manager Neil Redfearn: "The goal was a bit of quality and brilliance that was probably not in keeping with the rest of the game.

"But if anyone was going to win the game, it was going to be us.

"I thought we should have had a blatant penalty in the first half, but we don't seem to get these decisions."
