Ronnie Moore: Hartlepool boss backs ex-non-league striker duo

Hartlepool United manager Ronnie Moore has faith in the goalscoring qualities of former non-league strikers Ryan Bird and Scott Fenwick.

Bird, who joined Pools from Cambridge on a one-month deal, scored 45 goals in his final season at non-league Burnham before joining Portsmouth in July 2013.

Fenwick had seven goals in 11 Northern League games for Dunston before his Pools move in November 2014.

Moore told BBC Tees: "If you're a goal-scorer, you're a goal-scorer."

He added: "Ryan's a proven goalscorer, at non-league level, like Scott, he's the same, and he gives us one or two more options."

Since making the step up, Fenwick has contributed five goals in 14 games, seven of which were starts, while Bird has been less prolific with Cambridge, scoring four in 24.

However, while on loan at the Abbey Stadium last season the Slough-born forward netted four league goals in nine games and also netted in the U's FA Trophy final win against Gosport Borough.

"If we create chances and put the balls in the box there's no doubt he'll [Bird] get on the end of them as will whoever plays up there," continued Moore.

"We need to produce a bit more, away from home more than anything. We've defended well but not created enough."
