Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew earned a point in his first match against former club Newcastle as Fraizer Campbell's goal secured a draw.

Palace had the better of the first half, with a headed goal from Campbell ruled out for offside.

Newcastle took the lead with their first shot on target, Papiss Cisse nodding in Daryl Janmaat's cross.

Palace should have won - Pardew

But the hosts struck back through Campbell to deny the Magpies a second win under new boss John Carver.

The battling point continues the Eagles' impressive run since Pardew took over - they have now taken 10 points from a possible 15.

They are 13th in the Premier League table, just two places behind Newcastle, having been eight positions beneath the Magpies when Pardew switched clubs.

Palace had lost eight of their previous 10 matches against Newcastle but Wilfried Zaha soon tested Tim Krul, before Joe Ledley flicked a header over the bar from Jason Puncheon's free-kick.

Carver 'brave to play two strikers'

Campbell replaced the injured Yaya Sanogo midway through the first half. The striker almost made an immediate impact, but his glancing header from Puncheon's cross was correctly adjudged offside.

Newcastle then struck against the run of play as Janmaat skipped past Zaha and curled in a superb delivery for Cisse to head his 10th goal of the season.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini appeared to be struck by a coin thrown from the crowd as the visitors celebrated.

With his team staring at a second defeat in three Premier League matches, Pardew brought on Yannick Bolasie in place of Martin Kelly.

And the winger had an instant impact, delivering a superb cross from the right which Campbell slid in from three yards.

Palace continued to attack but Krul saved a point for the visitors with a brilliant sprawling save from Brede Hangeland's goal-bound header.

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew: "I thought we should have won. We started well but the chances were few and far between. Newcastle only had one shot on target but scored. We struggled to break them down but scored a great goal - it was a really special cross and we deserved to get something out of the game.

"We had plenty of options on the bench and, in the end, the bench made a difference. Yannick Bolasie and Dwight Gayle came on and upped the tempo.

"It was nice to see my old team and my friends from the club. We took a point and should be pretty pleased with that."

Newcastle manager John Carver: "It's another game unbeaten. That's one win, three draws and two defeats now, which is not bad in this league. We said before the game we knew we were up against a big physical side and the pitch was quite lively, so we knew it was going to be a bit of a battle.

"I stuck Papiss Cisse in. I was brave to play two strikers away from home but he's a fox in the box and, if he keeps scoring, he has to be in the team.

"It's a bit strange facing Alan Pardew because I worked with him for four years. Once I got off the bus I went into professional mode. After the game he said to me, 'Well done, you deserved the point'."
