Josh Scowen scored his first goal for Barnsley after joining from Wycombe Wanderers last month

Barnsley ended a run of seven straight away league defeats with a narrow win over Scunthorpe, despite Jean-Yves Mvoto's 55th-minute red card.

Paddy Madden twice went close for the hosts, while Conor Hourihane flashed a free-kick wide and had a shot saved.

Josh Scowen scored the game's only goal when he pounced on a defensive error to curl past goalkeeper Luke Daniels.

Mvoto was sent off for a second yellow card, but the Tykes held on to move up to 16th place.

Scunthorpe drop a place to 17th in League One, seven points above the relegation zone and five points off the play-off places.

Scunthorpe United manager Mark Robins told BBC Radio Humberside:

Robins on Scunthorpe v Barnsley

"We weren't good enough tonight. Unfortunately we huffed and puffed but created a number of opportunities again and then we didn't take the chances.

"We spoke about the fact that the game could be decided on a horrendous goal against us and not to let that happen and guard against it.

"We weren't good enough to break them down, they sat in deep when they went down to 10 men and we just weren't good enough or creative enough to open them up which is disappointing."
