Burnley moved out of the bottom three after an Ashley Barnes winner against Southampton gave the Clarets a third league win of the season.
The visitors had a chance to take the lead from the spot after George Boyd's trip on Ryan Bertrand, but Tom Heaton saved Dusan Tadic's penalty.
The miss was punished when Barnes' shot deflected in off Toby Alderweireld.
Southampton had a chance to level but Victor Wanyama headed over late on as they went five games without a win.
Jose Fonte had earlier headed straight at Heaton and and visiting right-back Nathaniel Clyne had sent a shot wide but Burnley held on.
The victory will serve to increase the self-belief, which manager Sean Dyche says is gradually developing, among the Clarets ahead of testing fixtures against Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Barnes will take the headlines with the winner but the work-rate of strike partner Danny Ings and heroics of Heaton were also pivotal for the home side.
Heaton dived low to his left to palm away Tadic's penalty and spare Boyd's blushes in an incident which had sparked a previously tight game into a more open contest.
Ings, making his 100th league appearance for Burnley, blocked a Clyne pass which led to the chance for Barnes, who took it to score his second league goal of the term.
Southampton had been hoping to get back to winning ways to prove to their critics there was substance to their sterling start to the season.
Going into the match, they had the meanest Premier League defence and were facing the joint worst goalscoring record in the top-flight.
Ronald Koeman gave 18-year-old midfielder Jake Hesketh a first senior start and he had a lively time.
He clattered into Heaton before going off injured after half an hour following a challenge with Michael Keane, and he was left in tears as he sat on the bench.
However, after quelling Burnley's threat, Southampton failed to build on their growing danger culminating in Tadic's missed penalty.
And, after defeats by Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United caused them to drop from second to fifth in the table, their struggles continue.
Burnley boss Sean Dyche: "We've had to dig in again. I thought in the first half we played very well and maybe surprised them a little bit.
"In the second half, they managed to grow into the game and we had to keep our resilience, shape and mentality to get the win.
"The penalty save was a massive moment. It is a penalty but we believe in Tom. He's made big saves for us before and has made that one today."
Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "Again the same story as last Monday against Manchester United. We had more chances, missed a penalty and one of our mistakes ended in 1-0.
"In my opinion, football is not that difficult but you can make it difficult.
"The difference between when we were winning games and are now losing them is a small detail like not punishing the opponent in a key moment like today. Also, doing more defensive mistakes."
