Preston North End 1-0 Shrewsbury Town

Preston moved into the third round of the FA Cup with a win over Shrewsbury.

Defender Paul Huntington scored the game's only goal, firing in his fourth of the season from a ricochet after Shrewsbury failed to clear a corner.

The away side fought back and David Buchanan was forced to clear James Collins' shot off the goal line.

Nat Knight-Percival then pulled back Paul Gallagher but the striker blasted the resulting penalty over the bar as North End held on to secure victory.

Shrewsbury's cup exits to Preston
Town have now been knocked out of two cup competitions by Preston this season, having lost 1-0 at Deepdale in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in September.

In an even contest, Shrewsbury had chances and Preston goalkeeper Thorsten Stuckmann was forced into saves by Collins and Liam Lawrence in the first half.

However, the scoreline could have been greater had veteran striker Kevin Davies not curled his shot wide and if Gallagher had shown more composure from the penalty spot.

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon told BBC Radio Shropshire:

"We didn't do enough in the first half. We were yards off the pace and all over the place. But, in the second half, we passed it around superbly and we're disappointed to have allowed the cross in, to allow them to score at head height, so we were punished by one mistake.

"We probably had total control in the second half but we just didn't have the cutting edge and composure needed to get back on level terms. We lacked in that final third and we didn't have the possession to break down a very difficult Preston defence.

"Preston are riding high in the division they are in - and we have run them very close. We changed the system, and they had to change things to match us. This club has made strides - and we have shown the fans where we want to be and what we are all about."
