Scunthorpe United 0-1 Reading

Nigel Adkins
Nigel Adkins saw his Reading side progress despite being on the back foot for much of the game

Jake Taylor scored an 85th-minute winner to help Reading through to the next round of the Capital One Cup at the expense of League One Scunthorpe.

The hosts had dominated for large parts of the match - having 12 shots on goal to Reading's seven - but were undone late on by the Championship side.

After the Iron had failed to clear a corner, Taylor was on hand to force his shot home from close range.

Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici made a string of quality saves.

He denied Neal Bishop from a sweetly-struck 25-yard free-kick, while strikers Paddy Madden and Gary McSheffrey also went close.

It was arguably Scunthorpe's best performance of the season so far, but not enough to deny Reading a place in the third round.

The Royals travel to Championship Derby in the third round.

Reading manager Nigel Adkins, who guided Scunthorpe to promotion from League One in 2007 and 2009:

"This is a special place for me. I spent 14 happy years here and I really appreciate the reception I got from the fans.

"I knew this would be a difficult game for us and credit to Scunthorpe for making it so hard.

"But we are in the next round of the cup and that it the most important thing."

Scunthorpe manager Russ Wilcox:

"I am gutted for the lads - and for the fans. We did not deserve this result.

"I thought we were the best team for 90 minutes. It was probably the best performance we have produced since I have been in charge at this club.

"We were creative and had some good chances. The only thing we are missing at the moment is in front of goal."
