Notts County: Hayden Mullins 'a true captain' - Shaun Derry

Hayden Mullins is a former England Under-21 international who started his career with Crystal Palace as a trainee in 1996

Manager Shaun Derry says he wanted Hayden Mullins to take over as captain of Notts County having played under him as skipper more than a decade ago.

Mullins, 35, was named captain of Crystal Palace during Derry's first spell at Selhurst Park in 2002.

"He is a true captain in all ways," Derry, 36, told BBC Radio Nottingham.

"When you are named as a captain so young it's because you are a proper captain. He has been a proper captain throughout his career."

Derry continued: "When I spoke to him in the summer about coming to Notts, I had no doubt in my mind that I wanted him to come as captain."

Versatile veteran Mullins replaces Alan Sheehan as skipper after the defender rejected the offer of a new deal to join Bradford City on a two-year contract.

Former Palace, West Ham and Portsmouth man Mullins, who has made 660 career appearances, moved to Meadow Lane from Birmingham City on a one-year deal earlier this month, having played 16 matches on loan for Notts last season.
