Scunthorpe United have appointed former Lincoln City boss John Schofield as their new assistant manager.

The 49-year-old held similar roles at Cheltenham, Cambridge and Gillingham, but left the Gills in May and will link up with the Iron next week.

Schofield played alongside Scunthorpe manager Russ Wilcox at Doncaster between 1994 and 1995.

"He's absolutely buzzing about joining us. This club ticks a lot of boxes for him," Wilcox told the club website.

"We are just fortunate that he has left Gillingham and [Gills boss] Peter Taylor wanted to move in a different direction."

The length of Schofield's contract has not been announced.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper James Severn has signed a new one-year contract.

The 22-year-old is yet to make his full Iron debut, having made just one substitute appearance since arriving from Derby County in May 2012.
