Aberdeen 1-0 St Johnstone

By Brian McLauchlinBBC Scotland at Pittodrie

Aberdeen secured their second Scottish Premiership win of the week by defeating St Johnstone at Pittodrie.

Ryan Jack gave the Dons the lead when his 25-yard shot deceived St Johnstone goalkeeper Alan Mannus.

Michael O'Halloran fired against the post as Saints tried unsuccessfully to force a leveller.

And the visitors ended the match with 10 men after substitute Steven MacLean picked up a second booking for a foul on Nicky Low.

The result keeps the Dons four points clear of third-place Motherwell while St Johnstone remain sixth in the Scottish Premiership.

Following Tuesday's victory over Celtic, Aberdeen were buoyant and took an early lead when Jack netted his first goal of the season.

However, the hosts struggled to build on their early advantage.

Lee Croft threatened with a shot as Saints began to trouble Jamie Langfield's goal.

And the visitors played with the benefit of a strong wind in the second period and piled pressure on the home goal.

Croft found himself one-on-one with Langfield after the Dons defence failed to deal with a long through ball.

The winger attempted to lift the ball over the keeper but Langfield stuck out his arm to clear.

Moments later, O'Halloran fired in a shot from outside the box that beat Langfield but rattled off the inside of the post before being cleared.

Stevie May, top scorer for the Perth side, was having a quiet afternoon and his volley from 16 yards was on target only to be blocked by the outstretched boot of Alan Tate.

However, Saints' hopes suffered a blow when David Wotherspoon's replacement MacLean was booked for the second time in 25 minutes following his challenge on Low.

Four minutes of stoppage time ensued but Aberdeen held out to claim the three points.
