Partick Thistle 3-1 Aberdeen

By Jonathan SutherlandBBC Scotland

Partick Thistle earned their first home win of the season with a rousing performance against Aberdeen.

The Dons' Barry Robson failed to convert a first-half penalty before Conrad Balatoni struck Thistle's opener near the hour mark.

Lyle Taylor fired in to put Thistle further ahead, but Adam Rooney's header pulled one back.

Six minutes later, Taylor added his second with a fine strike that secured the win for the hosts.

The first home win of the season keeps the Jags above second-bottom St Mirren in the lower half of the Premiership table on 25 points, while second-placed Aberdeen failed to put some extra distance between themselves and Motherwell in the race to finish behind league leaders Celtic.

After a fairly uneventful opening 15 minutes the match suddenly burst into life when Rooney latched onto a through ball into the box and as he attempted to round goalkeeper Gallacher.

The Aberdeen striker went down, and while contact looked minimal, referee Alan Muir was in no doubt and pointed straight to the penalty spot.

However, Gallacher rectified the situation on no uncertain terms when he denied Robson from the spot to make the save, but spilled the ball. Rooney reacted first to the rebound but Gallacher was there again to touch the ball wide.

There was another shout for a penalty soon after, again involving Rooney and Gallacher.

A 50-50 ball into the box saw Gallacher just get to the ball first, resulting in Rooney hitting the turf.

This time play was waved on, but by now Gallacher - and the home crowd - were less than pleased with the efforts of the Aberdeen striker.

The burgeoning duel between Gallacher and Rooney continued in the 36th minute, when a cross from Joe Shaugnessy found Rooney in the box and his downward header looked goalbound.

But there was Gallacher again to smother the attempt and keep the score at 0-0.

Partick Thistle enjoyed sporadic spells of possession, but struggled to create clear-cut chances.

The running of Lyle Taylor was keeping the Aberdeen central defenders busy, and, just before half-time on a counter-attack Taylor cantered at pace towards the Aberdeen goal then dragged his shot well wide of the post.

Immediately after the interval Shaughnessy almost put Aberdeen ahead, but somehow directed his header wide of the target.

There then followed a quick-fire double of Partick Thistle handball claims in the Aberdeen penalty area, but referee Muir waved them away.

Aberdeen's defence cleared a corner, but the ball was played back into the box and fell to the feet of Balatoni who struck into the bottom corner past the despairing Langfield.

After a quick break, Higginbotham flashed a cross ball into the six yard box and Taylor was there to smash the ball home.

Almost immediately Aberdeen pulled a goal back when a free-kick from Niall McGinn found the head of Rooney and his downward header found the net.

Just as it looked like Partick Thistle might struggle to hold on, a lofted through-ball found Taylor at the edge of the box and his perfectly angled shot found the far corner of the net.

As the match reached a conclusion, Johnny Hayes fired in a fierce drive which Gallacher batted away.

But it was too little too late for the Dons.
