Highlights - Partick Thistle 0-1 Aberdeen

Aberdeen defeated Partick Thistle for the third time in as many months to end the Jags' hopes of Scottish Cup glory.

Andrew Considine's header from a Barry Robson corner put the Dons in front in the fourth-round tie on five minutes.

Thistle goalkeeper Scott Fox denied Peter Pawlett before Gregg Wylde and Calvin Zola spurned good chances.

Kallum Higginbotham's curled shot tested Aberdeen keeper Jamie Langfield and the upright stopped Niall McGinn doubling the visitors' lead.

Had goalscorer Considine not been in position to block Isaac Osbourne's injury time shot, the tie may well have gone to a replay.

But one goal proved enough and Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes's pre-match assessment that Aberdeen are capable of winning two cups this season remains plausible.

A League Cup semi-final against St Johnstone in February awaits, with the domestic trophy hunt now enhanced by a place in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup.

Keeping it tight for the first five minutes, against an Aberdeen team who had put seven past them already this season, would surely have been among the messages from Thistle boss Alan Archibald as his charges left the dressing room.

But it was not be, as the visitors were presented with an all-too-easy lead in the Firhill sunshine.

A minute's silence was observed in remembrance of those involved in the Glasgow helicopter crash.

The flight of Robson's in-swinging corner went beyond Jags midfielder James Craigen and onto the head of an unchallenged Considine, who made no mistake from six yards.

A combination of poor marking and uncertain goalkeeping contributed to the big centre-back's second goal of the season.

Aberdeen had good chances to extend their lead as the first half progressed, Peter Pawlett's speculative, dipping half-volley from the best part of 30 yards bringing a fantastic save out of Fox.

The recent Scotland call-up went on to deny Ryan Jack's goal-bound effort, despite a nasty deflection off Aaron Taylor-Sinclair.

Any threat Partick did carry came via Higginbotham, who dragged low shots wide of either post in rare flurries towards Langfield's goalmouth.

Wylde and Zola were profligate when well-placed for Aberdeen as Thistle spent more time in Dons' territory nearing the break.

A scrappy second half was summed up by Michael Hector's ballooned shot deep into the crowd. McGinn's left-footed drive on the turn was much closer to extending the Dons' lead but found the side-netting.

In the final 10 minutes, Thistle forced Langfield into two good stops as they tried to avoid a Cup exit.

The Aberdeen keeper had to beat away Higginbotham's curler before tipping over Elliot's rising drive.

McGinn rattled the post after Jack led a counter-attack in injury time, but the hosts almost nicked an equaliser when former Don Osbourne's low shot was deflected wide by Considine.

Partick Thistle manager Alan Archibald: "It was a very disappointing goal to lose, especially so early in the game. It affects your plans. It was from a set play. We had warned them about Robson's delivery.

"We keep telling them about the small margins when you are playing against good teams and that was the difference today.

"The goal takes the wind out your sails. It was a lot more pleasing in the second half. At least we threatened Jamie Langfield. They defended ever so well. They threw themselves in front of a couple of things.

"There are positives to take from today's game. We did the ugly side of the game very well. We matched Aberdeen in work rate."

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes: "I think you've got to credit Partick. They got far more up against us in the second half.

"In the first half we looked a real threat. In the second half it was too frantic for my liking. The players went back to front too early.

"We were a wee bit wasteful with opportunities but we were more than good enough at times, none more so than with the goal, to get us into the next round.

"We had enough good movement and good play in the first half. I thought Peter Pawlett was instrumental in all of that.

"Peter took a sore one 15-20 minutes into the second half. We had to get him off and it wasn't a substitution we wanted to make.

"We huffed and puffed in the last 15-20 minutes but all in all I don't think anybody could argue we weren't the better side.

"Andy Considine was a real solid individual for us. It's good to have him back."
