Alan Cook's brilliant curling effort put Arbroath after the break.
Liam Buchanan levelled in the 70th minute with a left-footed drive and the striker headed in his second five minutes later.
Scott McBride was sent off for hauling Robert Linn down and Erwin stroked home the spot-kick before Gary Thom was also shown a red card.
Despite that dismissal for a second bookable offence, Arbroath could not take advantage.
