Wrexham scored two own goals to hand victory to Braintree, who moved to within a point of the Conference Premier play-off places.
Mark Carrington and Steve Tomassen put into their own nets in each half.
Between them came Dean Wells's side-footed goal for the visitors.
His 12-yarder was quickly followed up by a Wrexham brace, this time at the right end, but Johnny Hunt and Jay Harris's goals were not enough for the 18th-placed Welsh side.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Wrexham boss Andy Morrell told BBC Radio Wales: "We started the game horrendously badly, scored an own goal…. We concede two, do great to get back into it.
"[We] lifted ourselves off the floor and got ourselves back into it and then in the second half for 25 minutes we're camped in their half.
"We've lost another game and whether it's the ref or us - it's more us, I think - because we've conceded three sloppy goals."
