Josh Gillies's equaliser earned Gateshead a draw with Grimsby and moved them two points clear of the drop zone.
Grimsby, playing their first game since defeat by Wrexham in the FA Trophy final, went ahead through Andi Thanoj's rasping drive from outside the area.
Jamie Devitt twice hit the crossbar for the play-off chasing visitors, who remain fifth but are now four points clear of sixth-placed Forest Green.
Gillies' 79th-minute curling free-kick secured a point for the Heed.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Grimsby Town joint-manager Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Humberside:
"I think we dominated, totally dominated and feel a little bit cheated by a decision from the official when there's no contact whatsoever and he gets his shot off and then he decides to call it back for the free-kick so it leaves a bitter taste.
"In terms of our lads and the performance that they put in I have to say they were outstanding.
"If we keep playing anything like that then the results will turn and they will come and it gives us a lot of positives."
