Former captain Bongani Khumalo has been dropped by South Africa for next week's 2014 World Cup qualifier against Central African Republic.
Coach Gordon Igesund said the defender has not played enough football lately at his Greek club PAOK.
"Everybody is aware that he played his first game for his team last week," Igesund said of the man who led the team at the recent African Nations Cup.
Igesund said people should not read too much into Khumalo's axing.
Igesund has made five changes to the squad that played in the Nations Cup, with defender Siboniso Gaxa joining Khumalo on the sidelines.
Igesund has recalled Belgium-based Daylon Claasen after a long lay-off while Dino Ndlovu, who plays in Israel, has also been called up.
South Africa resume their self-proclaimed 'Road to Brazil' campaign on Saturday, 23 March at the Cape Town Stadium.
"As you can see, I did not make too many changes because I believe in continuity," said Igesund.
"We need to continue from where we left off in the Afcon because I believe we have a good chance of qualifying for Brazil."
Bafana Bafana are in third place in Group A after draws against Ethiopia and Botswana.
