Ayr managed to hold off second-placed Alloa to a draw in their Second Division match at Sommerset Park.
However, it was not easy for the home side with Alistair Brown being tested early on after he parried a fizzing Nick Low shot.
United did not make it easy for the visitors with David Sinclair's inswinging corners causing problems for the Alloa defence.
Sinclair also had an 18-yard shot blocked by Stephen Simmons after 37 minutes.
After the break The Wasps came out strongly and Martin Grehan's header was tipped over the crossbar by Brown.
But despite a handful of substitutions from both teams, neither side could find a winner.
