Sheffield-based boxing promoter Dennis Hobson has held talks with Scunthorpe United about joining the club's board.
The Iron are currently 23rd in League One and lost 3-0 at Sheffield United on Boxing Day.
"I think I'd bring something different to the table that could maybe help us get out of the situation we're in," he told BBC Radio Humberside.
"I'd like to be hands on because I think I could make the club be a bit more fashionable."
He added: "It's not necessarily just about making an investment, I want to get my hands dirty and help the club.
"I don't think it's a club that just needs money throwing at it, they need someone with some experience.
"I try and better any situation that I step into and hopefully I can help the club stay up, even if it's by the skin of our teeth."
Scunthorpe announced record losses of just under £2m for the financial year ending 30 June 2012.
Chairman Steve Wharton is stepping down from his position at the end of the season and Hobson admitted it is a position that could appeal to him.
"Maybe I'd be interested in stepping into that position," he continued.
"But for me being involved in a football club isn't about a fancy title, the important thing is helping the club achieve and knowing you were involved in that."
The Iron travel to high-flying Tranmere on Saturday before hosting Oldham on 1 January.
