Oldham 3-1 Preston

Oldham secured a comfortable victory over 10-man Preston in League One.

David Amoo and Stuart Beavon went close for the visitors early on, but Oldham took the lead when Jose Baxter fired in a fine 25-yard free-kick.

Cristian Montano drilled home the second from 16 yards, and Dean Furman seized on a defensive error to make it 3-0 with just over 20 minutes to go.

Shane Cansdel-Sherriff received a second yellow for tripping Lee Croft, and Akpo Sodje struck from close range.

Dickov praises Oldham excellence

"I thought the boys were excellent, it's possibly as good a home performance as we've had since I first took over when we beat Notts County 3-0.

"We set the boys a challenge to follow on from (winning at) Crewe and we passed the ball well and as a team worked our socks off.

"I've maybe taken some stick in some quarters but we knew it was going to take time with all the new players we've got - six, possibly seven who weren't here last season started this match.

"Without the ball we looked fit, determined and strong, and were very hard to break down. When you have that, with the players we have going forward, you have a really good chance of winning games.

"Reece Wabara was top-class, his reading of the game is way beyond his years and he's been a massive plus for us since he's come in. We'd love to extend his loan period here (from Manchester City) and hopefully we can keep him."

Preston North End manager Graham Westley told BBC Radio Lancashire:

Preston energy insufficient - Westley

"I obviously put the wrong team out there because if I'd have put the right one out there we'd have won the match - there was nothing out there (from Oldham) that surprised this afternoon.

"We were way below the level we need to be to win games.

"Their appetite for the game and their sense of purpose and desire was greater than ours.

"I do have to express concern with the way certain decisions and aspects of the game went. We earned two penalties in a matter of seconds and the fact neither was given was wrong."
