Watford 1-0 Wycombe
Chris Iwelumo scored in extra-time as Watford beat League Two Wycombe in the Capital One Cup in Gianfranco Zola's first competitive match in charge.
This was the first meeting between the two sides in the League Cup and only the sixth clash in all competitions.
Richard Logan went closest for Wycombe, who had right-back Marvin McCoy taken off with an injury in the first half.
Substitute Iwelumo netted from close range after Matej Vydra's pull-back to win for the Championship side.
Joe Garner had Watford's best chance in normal time, while Logan fired wide on the breakaway for the visitors.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Watford manager Gianfranco Zola told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"They made it difficult for us because they didn't concede us a lot of space.
"In the first half, especially, we were too slow moving the ball and there were a lot of individual mistakes, so we didn't get the rhythm we wanted.
"I was expecting and looking for a game like this.
"Our friendlies have been very good but sometimes you need something like this to improve because we need to take our game to a higher level."
