No team will be able to stop the German machine. They are absoulately unstoppable. Gomez again showed his class with two brilliantly taken goals. How could Gomez's quality be questionioned? Van Persie is still one of the best centre forwards in the world. Just because he has missed a few chances. That goal was superb and came out of nowhere.
Poor performance, no flair or imagination just flat, to be fair nobody expected much, hopefully on an early flight home time to get some new blood. Even ITV are better than this . Please get rid of Lawrenson
@Alex: 40No it goes to goal difference. Anyway they have both scored the same and would still have if they both lose 1-0. Uefa Coefficients people, Uefa Coefficients.
The worrying thing is that in the second half Mario Gomez was getting back and actually defending, something never seen before. Unlike the Dutch, these guys do play for each other.
a @ 44 and 40Just to clear it up it goes to goal difference not goals scored. If portugal denmark and holland all finish on 3 points each it goes on goal difference in the matches between those 3 teams. Holland winning by 2 clear goals would see them through if denmark lose. @40 your hypothetical question would see portugal through as they won the head to head with denmark.
@40:Denmark have also scored 3, 1 against Holland, 2 against Portugal. In this hypothetical scenario (Holland win 1-0, Denmark lose 1-0), Holland would be bottom having scored the fewest goals but Denmark and Portugal would be all-square. The question is, with the Dutch eliminated, are the head-to-heads of the remaining two teams looked at again, or does it go to coefficients?
Truth is that Robben did not assist RVP when he should .That explains all. Robben plays too selfishly and cannot see who is around to assist. RVP could have scored more goals than Gomez in both games.
2 words - Mesut Ozil.What.A.Player. His nonchalant gait belies his incredible ability. The best midfielder in the world for me, right now.
@39: that makes no senseHow does one man's club (RVP) affect how his national team perform? Are you suggesting the Dutch are a one-man team?...Also, wouldn't RVP disproportionally high goals ratio for Arsenal suggest your 'theory' is contradictory and nonsense?
@seanschmolz : 36. " So it goes to goal difference."no, it goes to goals scored first - and that would be POR because they have already bagged 3
The moral of the story is that all the fascination with possession statistics means nought if you do not convert them into goals.Holland's first two games at the Euros are results RVP is used to already playing for Arsenal - lots of possession against weaker teams and nothing to show for, then defensively crumble against better teams early on and gave themselves an uphill fight from the get go
How teams go through:Germany: 1 point to win group, qualify if they lose if Portugal don't win.Denmark: equal or better Portugal resultPortugal: Better Denmark resultNetherlands: Win and have a swing of 3 goals in their favour, ie win 2-0 and Germany beat Denmark 1-0.
Germans as always look good for the winners. Strong defence and good going forward. Haven't seen anyone who looks a solid as them in the tournament so far.
Here's if Denmark and Portugal both lose 1-0.Holland, Denmark and Portugal all on 3 points. Because there are 3 teams each ones result against the others is cancelled out, otherwise they would all be jumping each other. So it goes to goal difference.Denmark and Portugal would have exactly the same. So it goes to Uefa Coefficent points. Denmark have more points than Portugal so would go through
@J0NNY88: yeah that's pretty much it. Important to remember it's GD against each other that counts - not the group. So assuming DEN lose and NED win 1-0, all would have +1 GD, meaning POR go through as they have +3 Goals Scored. NED need to win by 2 clear goals to progress. Poor DEN are in the worst position - they need at least a point against GER to have any chance, otherwise out regardless
If DEN lose against GER and NED beat POR you will have 3 teams on 3 points. Head to head would not be able to tell them apart as each team has had a win against one of the others. Goal diff comes into play and then goals scored, it still doesn't look good for NED. But I hope they do beat POR and DEN go through. Best result for ENG if we make it through.
They dealt with the Dutch knocking the ball around.the changes didn't work; the inclusion of Van der Vaart gave Germany the middle of the park and the 4-2-4 style still didn't give them many options. It was called the group of death, and if this is what death is like then can I meet my maker, as he will surely be a football fan.http://noeasyfootballblogsatthislevel.blogspot.co.uk/
@Sultan Linekar: " Holland win 1-0, Denmark lose 1-0.Consider all three teams. Points, head-to-heads, and goal diff. are the same but NED scored fewer goals so we can eliminate them leaving DEN and POR. If we recalculate the head-to-head for just these two teams then Portugal go through."This is what i meant, there 0% chance for NED. If I understand clearly UEFA Head-to-Head standing scenario.
@29. FHYou have to consider ALL the teams with equal points, you can't take them two at a time. In the scenario where Holland beat Portugal, Portugal beat Denmark and Denmark beat Holland then none of the three qualifies on wins alone, it has to come down to goal difference.
