Hayes secured a vital point in their battle against relegation with a goalless draw against Cambridge.
In a first half which lacked chances, Harry Pell's drive was saved by home keeper Steve Arnold while Piero Mingoia fired wide at the other end.
The U's took control after the break and Arnold was forced into action again to save Rossi Jarvis's effort.
Hayes managed to hang on despite going down to 10 men when Dwane Lee saw red for a tackle on Andy Pugh.
VIEWS FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Cambridge United manager Jez George told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:
"It was a game that was probably hard to watch, both teams felt the surface was poor.
"It was a real bumpy pitch which made passing the ball difficult.
"It was one of the lowest quality games i've seen all season.
"We did everything we could to try to win the game but the pitch defeated us."
