Defender Jerel Ifil uncertain of Kettering Town future

Kettering Town defender Jerel Ifil says he is unsure about his future at the financially troubled club.

The 29-year-old has made 22 appearances since joining in the summer but, like the rest of the squad, has not received his full wages.

Ifil told BBC Radio Northampton: "I have two kids and a wife asking how the mortgage is going to be paid. You do look at other avenues.

"But this is a good team and everything here is perfect for progress."

The former Swindon, Bristol Rovers and Aberdeen player added: "We have so much potential. That's the reason why I came here. If things were done properly, we'd do so well.

"You're pulled in two different directions and my family comes first, so wherever I can pay my bills would be the best place to be.

"But at the same time, you wish that new owners or investors come in, take the bull by the horns and say 'look what we've got here, let's use it to move forward'."

Ifil was man-of-the-match as Kettering beat Lincoln 1-0 in the Blue Square Bet Premier on Saturday and recorded only their second back-to-back wins of the season to lift them out of the relegation zone.

And he says that new caretaker manager Ashley Westwood has helped to make the team stronger defensively.

"We've been building on what we've been told and trying to keep a solid team shape. It seems settled in the back four.

"The manager knows what he wants as a defender. He sets up the team in a way where we defend first and foremost and build from there."

Meanwhile, Westwood is hopeful that he will not lose any players in the January transfer window.

"If I was watching from another team, I'd be taking a few of these players because they're showing they've got quality," said the former Northampton Town and Wrexham centre-half.

"They've certainly showed on the field that they can do a job. I'll switch my phone off for a few days and hopefully that window will pass we'll still have the same team for Saturday."
