Gateshead have signed central defender Carl Magnay until the end of the season after a successful trial.
The 23-year-old came through Chelsea's academy, but was released in the summer without making a first-team appearance.
Gateshead manager Ian Bogie told BBC Newcastle: "He's a footballing centre-half with a bit of aggression in there and is a good distributor of the ball.
"It's an area of the team we needed to improve and Carl is another great acquisition to the squad."
In addition to his career at Chelsea, the Gateshead-born defender enjoyed loan spells at MK Dons and Northampton.
