Tranmere defender Danny Holmes says he is determined to keep his place in the team in order to extend his contract at Prenton Park.

Holmes, 23, has started Rovers' last seven games with his one-year-deal expiring in the summer.

"Hopefully I can stay here for longer," Holmes told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"I'm trying to take my opportunity with both hands and I just want to keep my run in the team going. I must keep putting in good performances."

Tranmere have won just one of their last 12 matches in League One and have slipped to 17th in the table.

Despite their recent poor form, the former New Saints defender says the players remain in a positive mood ahead of Saturday's home game with promotion hopefuls Huddersfield.

"The results on the road haven't been the best, with seven defeats on the bounce," Holmes continued. "I think in some of those games we should have got something out of them.

"So it's not all doom and gloom. We're a positive bunch and we're always looking forward and hopefully we'll get the result we want next week."
