Lincoln City have signed former Newport County full-back Paul Robson, 28, on non-contract terms.
Robson, who left the Exiles in October, is eligible for the Blue Square Bet Premier side's FA Trophy second round tie against Carshalton Athletic.
"Full-back has been a worrying position for me and Paul was available," manager David Holdsworth told BBC Lincolnshire.
"It's an area I was keen to improve on because we don't have too many versatile players defensively."
Holdsworth says concern over the fitness of Tony Sinclair prompted the move for Robson, who can play at both left-back and right-back.
"Tony's had an ongoing problem with his ankle and he's been playing through the pain barrier for us," said the Imps boss.
"But he's not been able to train between games and it's imperative that players do that.
"I felt that if it was going to start affecting the team in that department I would have to look at it, and the young defenders who I've brought in will also benefit from Paul's experience."
