Jose Enrique due Spain call-up - Stewart Downing

Liverpool winger Stewart Downing believes defender Jose Enrique is in the sort of form which should see him selected in the next Spain squad.

"We seemed to have clicked straight away and he's a talented player," Downing told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"He's done very well and I think playing the way he is he's got a great chance of getting in the Spain squad."

He added: "I've enjoyed playing with him and you can see we're gelling quite well as a team. It's only pleasing for the manager and the club."

Saturday's 2-0 win at West Brom leaves Liverpool sixth in the Premier League and just a point away from the Champions League qualification places.

The victory was aided by Andy Carroll scoring his second league goal of the season, and Downing says the former Newcastle striker will be boosted by his recent form.

"Andy's not played much of late but in the last two games he's been brilliant," Downing continued. "Against Stoke he did really well and against West Brom he got a goal and hopefully his confidence is sky high.

"All strikers are judged on goals and Andy is no different. His link-up play has been good and he's just been missing that goal.

"It was a tough chance for him to take against West Brom but I thought he stuck it away quite well. With him on form and Louis [Suarez] on form, it's only good for the team."
