Northampton Town's Derek Niven says that his experience can help the club's youngsters during his loan spell.

The 27-year-old midfielder made his debut in the 1-1 draw with Rotherham, on a month's loan from Chesterfield.

Niven told BBC Radio Northampton: "Michael Jacobs is good to play alongside. I [just] talked to him, kept him in position.

"I've been in the game for awhile, I'm an experienced professional and hopefully I can help players."

Niven also praised winger Lewis Young, whose cross led to the Cobblers' equaliser.

"He's a big prospect - he's a got pace and everything [you need] for a winger," he said.

"Northampton have got a good bunch of lads, with pace out wide, a big strong lad in Adebayo Akinfenwa and it's difficult to see why they're in the position they are.

"They've got good players and, in time, will climb the table."
