Southport forward Shaun Whalley says the club are worthy of their lofty position in the Blue Square Bet Premier this season.
The Sandgrounders are seventh, just one point outside the play-off places.
Whalley told BBC Radio Merseyside: "After playing the games we have, I think we deserve to be up there.
"I don't think others are much better than us. We've just got to keep working hard and we'll see where we are [in the table]."
Southport take a break from the league at the weekend when they host Stockport County in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.
Whalley says he was far from disappointed to draw a fellow Blue Square Bet Premier team, as he believes it will bring out the best in the Sandgrounders.
"Personally I was happy with the draw, I didn't want a team lower down the leagues," Whalley continued.
"Sometimes you can get in the mindset you're going to beat them anyway, but now we all know we've got to be on our game to get anything from Stockport.
"I haven't had a good FA Cup run in my career and I love the FA Cup, so I really want to do well in it this season. You need a bit of luck but hopefully we can do alright."
